Millwall Away - 1990
I've heard my old man's stories of the absolute CARNAGE that day - kick-off being delayed for 30 minutes because of all the fighting and pubs being smashed-in...

What about anyone else on here who was there for the 1-1 draw?...

Seems to be down as one of the most PWOPAAH NAWTIEST Away Days in the club's history...

I was there but got in the ground fairly early and missed most of the 'fun'.

I don't even remember the kick-off being delayed. For me two years earlier was more eventful but I'm sure others will tell you different.

Re: Millwall Away - 1990
I was only 15 and went with a mate who to this day has never raised a fist in anger and it was certainly an adrenaline rush.

A road about 3/4 streets from the ground must have had what seemed like 1000 people down it throwing missiles and fighting each other and there was carnage all the way from old Kent road station.

Have never to this day known our away end to be so rammed and you could see pockets of fights break out in the ground in the home end.

Kept in for over an hour after and the celebrations for the equaliser were also the most mental I've felt a terrace go. Fucking brilliant and the next Sunday trip there for a 12 kick off was shit, as the police would never do a Saturday game ever again.

An arsenal friend of mine from school who ran with the gooner firm told me he went there purely as he knew he'd get a guaranteed fight , had a knife pulled on him by a west ham fan and never went to another live match ever again.

Was the only time I went to Millwall and may well have been my first away game after coming over from Australia.
An eyeopener!

Sure there was no delay to kick off but did hear later there were 8,000 West Ham in a terrace meant for 5,000.

December 88 was what I think of as the Last Hurrah for the old school lads before the rave scene pulled a lot of bodies out of the mix and many settled down after that; nothing left to prove. The legendary "West Ham taking lberties" beano from the transport police documentary. I had never seen such a mob assemble as the one that gathered in Canning Town that morning, and I don't think there has been such a turn out since.

Missed the 1990 one but went the '79 one at end of the season. That was one of the best mobs I've seen. Met at the Wentworth arms, mile end and went to new cross gate.
Carnage that night as well.

Lilly hammer - Spot on.
A lot of us bailed out when the rave scene came in.

Re: Millwall Away - 1990
88 was mayhem with all the pubs being done over, remember a brick being thrown at Dicks and Ince as they celebrated the winner. '90 was a proper toe to toe outside before the game, I had my cheekbone broke by one their cunts doing me with a cosh. We had about 8000 rammed into that terrace that could hold 6000. Absolutely mental when McAvennie scored!

Plain clothes old bill on us very early in the morning too. My Derby mate came and he said " fuck me they are trying to kill us" πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜† as scaffold pole jointers came flying through the air!

Four of us and about 7-8 outside the ground up a side street and they really didn't fancy it πŸ‘πŸ”¨πŸ”¨πŸ”¨πŸ”¨

One of my first ever away days (what was I thinking!!) I was 16 and dragged a few non-WHU mates along too cos they were keen to see what it was all about. Remember not getting served in a pub in the west end so we jumped on the tube and made our way to new cross. Looking back we were so naΓ―ve.

As we came out onto the road I clearly remember seeing too old boys and they must have been 65+ each having a dust up. Couldn’t believe my eyes. Loads of police horses about and sirens. It was obvious there was a lot of trouble going on. We heard the game had been delayed (apparently cos no-one was actually inside the ground!) and we cautiously made our way to our end. Relieved to get in. My mates were very very quiet.

One of the worst views ever in that corner – Big bleeding pylon in the way. Still, most of the game was spent giving verbals and sending over coins to each other.

Thankfully Frankie bailed us out late on. Beautiful. Ended up about 30feet from where I began celebrating. Crushed ribs the lot. Wonderful.

We were held in for ages after. Always remember my mate turning to me and saying β€œThat bloke just said, β€˜not looking forward to this.. it was mental last year’ and he’s massive!!!”.

Remember the sound of the helicopter above us as one of the biggest escorts was given as we went on our way.

Irons.

Was this the WEST HAM TURN BACK OR DIE graffiti on the wall of the station one? That had probably been there for years though.

In 88 that was sprayed on the turnstile housing at the away end, read it whilst loads of walking wounded making their way into the shit hole.

Re: Millwall Away - 1990
Was 19. We met up early at Upminster and my mate's 48 year old dad turned up with him for some odd reason (he was a fireman). We all asked each other why he was coming, as we'd never seen him at WHU before. When I saw him steaming in later after we'd got off at New Cross Gate, we then kind of understood.

Me and my mate were standing on a garden wall to get a good view of the fighting, until another fella came up, told us to get down and then kicked the wall to pieces to get the bricks!

My main memories of that day include running up and down streets that ran parallel to each other (off Brocklehurst St, just checked). WHU would run up from one end, Millwall would run up from the other, fight, move apart, go on to the next road and repeat, also getting bit on the bum by a police dog.

The only way to get to the away end from the streets was a small alleyway. WHU were on one side and Millwall were on the other. Anyone who went to go into the alleyway was obviously West Ham, therefore got attacked by the Millwall. I'll always remember one copper standing there, pushing West Ham fans towards the gap and shouting "What are you, men or mice?!!". The 'wall fans threw a plank of wood at some fellas who ran into the alleyway, who then threw it straight back and hit about four of them.

On the packed terrace, there were blokes standing there covered in blood, looking like they'd been in a war. Don't recall much about the game, apart from Frankie's late equaliser.

Fucking amazing memories, that me and my mates still talk about now.

Can remember the chant of You're just a bunch of wankers aimed at the Millwall fans.

Sharp social commentary that remains true to this day

Got nicked that day, as a spotty little 20 year old herbert.

As all of us come out after the game, during which we were constantly pelted by bricks and stones lobbed from what looks like 9 year olds outside the ground, there was a parked Ford Transit which of course we all through would be a good idea to push towards the Millwall at the other end of the street.

Someone broke the window, released the handbrake and I thought it would be a good idea to jump in the drivers seat and steer. Loads of West Ham pushed the Trans(h)it as I sat in the seat being cheered on.

Coppers grabbed me after a minute or so. Night in the cells, charged with nicking a vehicle, driving with no insurance and licence.

When it got to the Magistrates Court a few weeks later, luckily the two coppers who nicked me had different versions of events and very poor notes taken. Magistrate threw it out, case dismissed.

Not my finest hour!
